Ice-Rink Removed from Fairhill due to Safety Concerns

The Management at Fairhill Shopping Centre had to cancel their Christmas Indoor Ice- Rink last week due to genuine safety concerns. The ice-rink which was due to open on Saturday was organized by the centre, as a Christmas Fund-raiser for Macmillan Cancer Support. All proceeds from the tickets bought, were going directly to Macmillan Cancer Support’s new palliative care unit in Antrim.

We are absolutely devastated that we had to remove the ice-rink from the centre before it opened to the public. We have been so excited about bringing it to the centre and customers were really looking forward to coming along for a fun day out on the ice, however the safety & well being of our customers is always our utmost priority. After several days of construction, it was apparent that this ice-rink did not meet the safety and hygiene standards that we demand in the centre. We had to react quickly and unfortunately have the contractor remove the construction immediately.

We are sorry to have disappointed children & adults who were looking forward to the ice-rink however, any customers we have talked to have supported our decision to withdraw the ice rink due to safety concerns and have pledged their support for our next charity event for Macmillan Cancer Support in the New Year.

On Saturday, there were Christmas Craft Making stalls for kids, with face painters, huge teddy bear characters giving out balloons and chocolate lollipops to kids. Next week from the 15-17 December, Fairhill hosts its 2nd Christmas Market with over 20 market stalls in the mall. There will be face painters, balloons and free treats for the kids.

Lisa Mc Grogan, Area Fundraising Manager at Macmillan Cancer Support said, “It was disappointing that the Ice-Rink was unable to open however we totally support this very brave decision by the centre. To date we have raised over £20,000 with Fairhill and we know how committed they are to raising our target of £30,000, so together we are putting our heads together to plan some fund raising events in the New Year.”

Next week at the Christmas Market, Macmillan Cancer Support are taking a table to gift wrap gifts for charity donations, so any customers who don’t like wrapping gifts can simply bring them along to Fairhill on Saturday and have them wrapped while they shop. All proceeds will go directly to Macmillan’s new palliative care unit in Antrim.
